My friend is in jail and I have a feeling he is not leveling with with what he did. Could someone clear this up. All he says is that he passed a check that bounced. I think there's something more to it.

Thanks
Cassie

to add furthur details, my frind is in the Martinez Calif. jail. He says, as part of an inheritance, he got a check worth 80K and then went out and bought a 60 K car. He's saying the First check had insufficient funds, and the bank now pressed charges.

Well, if it's a felony hot check that can be serious.

Alot of times if it's misdemeanor they will have to pay what they owe or serve time in the county jail.

Do you know which it is? He may not have the money to bond out.

Grand theft is usually stolen money well over $1,500.00. Be advised that each State usually has there own definition of what "Grand Larceny" is. What State are you from?

If you friend passed a bad check and received a jail sentence then chances are the check was written for a very large lump some of money. Go to the court house that convicted him or her and ask to see your friends case information. Usually everything is a matter of public record excluding domestic violence related cases (when you're the victim, that is).

If you steal or defraud someone out of a substantial amount of money (varies per locality) it is considered grand theft. Money of course would be taking money and labor might mean stiffing someone after they do work for you.

If he hired someone to do something worth over a certain am out and paid him with a bad check -grand theft labor. It might have been something like that.

A lot of money = Grand Theft. A little money = Petty Theft.
