Liberalist--I think someone made that up. He is liberal (I assume you are talking about FDR) because he started a variety of social programs called the New Deal. Making programs that help some citizens at the expense of other citizens is basically what earned him the label.

Some of these programs were to employ the unemployed--highways and other construction projects were undertaken in order to create jobs rather than because we needed the product. I think social security was his administration, I'm not sure. Basically, under pure capitalism, society began to fail, and he sought to improve opportunity for the poor while preserving the benefits competition brings to capitalism.

Basically, you divide liberal, conservative, libertarian, and populist according to people's beliefs on how large they feel the government's role should be in different areas.

Liberals--government should regulate economy, but not regulate moral choices.
Conservatives--government should not regulate economy, but should make laws that reflect the morals of most citizens.
Populists--(aren't many of them left)--government should regulate the economy and make laws concerning morality.
Libertarian--the government shouldn't regulate the economy, nor should they regulate morality.

Those descriptions are stated more absolutely than reality--i.e. conservatives don't want unregulated commerce, but generally speaking, they think the fewer restrictions, the better.

He was a liberal in the sense that liberal ideology promotes the use of government power for social reforms. The conservative ideology promotes minimum government interference in the lives of private citizens, leaving each private citizen responsible for his/her own livelihood. When President Roosevelt started The New Deal, he and his cabinet came up with a mountain of programs and new government agencies aimed at helping the American people. It worked pretty darned well, but it came at a cost -- it was the first stepping stone on the way to big government and it gave the government more authority over the private citizen (and any time you give the government more authority you take a certain amount of freedom away from citizens).

I assume you mean Franklin Roosevelt. There were two presidents Roosevelt, Theodore and Franklin. Franklin Roosevelt was a liberal because he believed in government control of pretty much everything. The basic difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals want the government to provide or control most things and conservatives believe in the Constitution that seriously restricts what the federal government can and cannot do, provide or control.

If you mean liberal here is what he believed and what many others do too:

LIBERALS
Liberals share a belief in individual rights, free enterprise, representative democracy, and the rule of law. In this sense, almost all Americans accept liberal ideas. So much so that it is easy to forget how revolutionary these ideas were when the American Constitution was written. Thomas Jefferson said, “Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with more.” All of our founding fathers considered liberalism a foundation of “the great experiment”. America since Reagan, liberalism has been colored to appear weak and elitest and our military force is used to intervene in other nations affairs.
Think liberal, think BIG.

Because of his role in expanding the government. He needed to do something to curb the flood of depression, and thought the best way was to use the government to create jobs and projects to get men back to work. He also started Social Security.
