What kind of assetts can you have or not have in order to qualify for SSI? Briefly, how do you qualify?

My father applied for SSI a couple weeks ago, and hasn't been approved yet. He owns a home, has a couple weeks before forclosure, and wants to sell the house before that happens. Now can he still get on SSI if he has money from this house sale?
