I got wait listed at Stanford, which is my #1 choice college. I wrote them a letter telling them anything else that I think could help my application go through. Any advice on any other measures I should take?

Make sure you have a Plan B, and make sure you're accepted. Before committing to your second choice, wait till the "Wait List" period is up at Stanford (but don't wait so long that you're unable to go to Plan B). You may still get in, but it'll take a bit longer to know for sure. Don't give up. It's not a "no." It's a "not yet, but maybe."

Waitlisting, unfortunately, has become very common, and the results are becoming increasingly poor. Writing a letter was a great idea... you could also visit the campus (if you can afford it/take time off to actually make the trip), meet with some admissions people and maybe a professor. I know a friend who was waitlisted at Villanova and went down there to take another tour and talk to some people... she actually got a professor at the school to write her a recommendation for her. Just let them know that this is your absolute first choice, because they don't want to admit someone who isn't committed to them (that would mean less money for them, which is bad business). Good luck!

I wouldn't expect that new information will do anything for you. They have already made their determination of the relative rank of your application, and probably don't want to go through the process again, short of something really earth shaking like you being Canonized or appearing on Dog, The Bounty Hunter.

You're just waiting to see if enough people that are above you on the list wind up going to Harvard, Yale, or appearing on Dog, The Bounty Hunter.

So, while you wait, apply to other schools.

if you know someone on the inside now would be a good time to ask for a favor but if you are like most people you may want to have back up plan like what is your second choice?

Go with your second choice and then transfer later...
