insecurity, for lack of a better word

advertisers breed insecurity to convince people that they need to buy their products. that by purchasing these products, you will be happier, healthier, sexier, and more popular. meanwhile, the television always shows us what we cannot have; makes us want what we do not need; makes us aspire to the accumulation of worthless crap just so we can fulfill some unspecified need to be accepted by our peers. drive the luxury car, own the big mcmansion, wear designer clothes -- otherwise you're life has little value. they create "reference groups" -- like those people in the show "friends". completely unattainable lifestyles, given what those people supposedly did for a living. or soap operas, whose sets are so extravagant and yet people think their own homes should look that way. i think people should really be insecure with our culture and the direction our society has taken. what a stale place we live. materialism gets you nowhere with the bigger questions, if anything, it distracts us from them.

EXPERIENCE. or VALUE I think most consumers are consuming an experience that is offered by the product/service.

It's what that product or service is fulfilling in you that is being consumed. The psychology behind consumer behavior is about creating a need/ want/ desire for a particular product/service to give an experience to the consumer. Once the purchase has been done, its the the experience of that purchase that defines his//her behavior.

Illusion.

Beyond the basic means for survival, life for most becomes a pursuit of happiness. The idea that material possessions can give you a fulfilling happiness is illusory. Consumers are chasing a lifelong mirage that will ever be out of the reach of their hands... and wallets. For money alone cannot buy contentment.

I hope you give the answer to this when you find out, I'm dying to know now.
My best guess is 'producers', because if there are too many consumers there must not be as many producers.

Marketing.

Consumers are bombarded constantly with marketing and advertising. They buy many products and services based upon the information directed at them by manufacturers, distrubutors and merchants from all over the world.

Experience.

They want to live the experience the product or service provides. Advertisements, word of mouth and popular culture push people to try out things they wouldn't normally be interested in.
