The episode was Once more with feeling (#107) and according to IMDB Defying Gravity was not one of the musical pieces.

However there was a song "Going Through the Motions" that resembles a piece of music from Wicked.

Season 4, Episode 10: Hush Original Air Date: 14 December 1999 This episode begins with Buffy having a strange dream about a girl singing a song about everything being silent. Blowing it off Buffy and Giles continue on with their lives until the whole town wakes up voiceless. Chaos erupts in Sunnydale, with the rest of the country claiming its a case of Laringitus. However when Giles friend see creepy men floating around the streets at night, and people are turning up murdered and heartless Giles makes a connection between these "Gentleman" and a fairytale called "The Gentleman". The gang soon figures out what needs to be done, and strive to save the town before more people are killed. One of the good things about this episode is we get to meet Tara. She's so cute and timid and tough! Also, without the ability to speak Riley and Buffy are able to show their true feelings for each other. And Xander is so adorable when he defends the "helpless" sleeping Anya from Spike. does that sound right.

I am not sure if Wicked was on Broadway at the time the "Once More with Feeling" episode aired. But it was a great episode. And if the song was from Wicked that show has some great music!

That episode was fantastic! And yes, Joss apparently did write all the songs. What a genius!
