DVD lesson 101...
The DVD world is divided into six major geographical regions, with two additional regions reserved for specialized use.
To keep it simple, this means that DVD players and DVDs are labeled for operation on within a specific geographical region in the world.
For example, the U.S. is in region 1. This means that all DVD players sold in the U.S. are made to region 1 specifications. As a result, region 1 players can only play region 1 discs.
The geographical regions are as follows:
REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 -- China
REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 -- Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are encoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

The end result is that DVDs encoded for Region 1(U.S.) cannot be played on another regions DVD player.
Bottom line, which you have discovered, is that your regions Play Station cannot play region 1 DVD’s

Modifications may be able to be made to the unit, or you can find software on the web that will remove region DVD coding .You can then re-record it to another DVD.

Probably your best option is to determine exactly what region you play station was intended for (probably region 2) and sell it back on e-Bay in that region and buy another PS3 designed for the U.S.

First of all forget about playing PS2 games on PS3.
If you are happy to buy them some new PS3 games which comes in Blue Ray disks instead of DVDs then the good news is Japan and US are going to share the same region code. So your Japan PS3 can play US Games.

Unfortunately, you cannot play American PS2 games and American movies on a Japanese PS3. So far, there is no way to circumvent this problem. As good as hackers are, they still haven't found a way to get rid of the region coding for PS2 games.

Why are you using the PS3 to play PS2 games? You can just get a PS2. It's only 129.99, which is cheaper than whatever you paid for the PS3. Use the PS3 to play PS3 games. Fortunately, PS3 games don't have any region codes, so you can play American PS3 games on a Japanese PS3.

ok here is the problem:
The region code is a way to control what movies and games are playable in which part of the world ( it is a marketing tactic). Since you got your PS3 from Japan you can only play DVDs and games which are created in Japan. Any DVD or games that are created in North america WILL NOT work no matter what you do :S.

The best solution would be to find a software or hardware MOD ( modification chips which remove these limitations). They are not legal so keep that in mind but if you ask around someone should tell you where you can get one.

Yes, and all though some of the Rothchild conspiracies may be valid, evolution isn't a lie, its a fact. FACT This means that it can't be dis-proven- so you have no where to go, sorry. But, my great-grandchildren will look back at our time and react by saying "what good is religion for all the hurt it causes everyday?"

You can not change the region code.

There is NOTHING you can do.

There is NO software or hardware modification available to to this yet either (and likely won't be for quite awhile if ever...)
