Some things that all communists adhere to:
no religion - in all communist states, religion is suppressed as much as possible.
state control - in communism, as described by Lenin, there must be a dictatorship of the proletariat (working class) who lead the people. Everything is owned by the state so no privatley owned assets like land or housing.
Red - the colour of communism. The Red Army was the national army of the USSR, Red Guard, Red Army, etc.
no class system - in communism anything except working class is considered bad and must be destroyed. So anything that could be considered upper class like hiring maids, riding in expensive cars, etc will be considered bad.
A communist in today's world will probably hate Bush (more than the average Bush-hater) and anyone conservative. They will probably wear clothing with the hammer & sickle logo (although many people wear this as a fashion, sadly). They will probably think Hugo Chavez is a visionary leader.

Self-identified communists hold a variety of views, including Maoism, Trotskyism, council communism, Luxemburgism, anarchist communism, Christian communism, and various currents of left communism, which are generally the more widespread varieties.
However, various offshoots of the Soviet (what critics call the 'Stalinist') and Maoist interpretations of Marxism comprise a particular branch of communism that has the distinction of having been the primary driving force for communism in world politics during most of the 20th century.
The competing branch of Trotskyism has not had such a distinction.

They think the government should take care of them. That's a communist mentality. I would say more, but I am afraid it will get me in trouble.

He/she would claim to be an Atheist for one, they would never keep the 2ND Commandment which is to 'love your neighbor as yourself' for two, and they would most likely just be living a miserable existence of just getting by for three. Just ask anyone formerly living in the U.S.S.R., I'm sure that you would get an ear full of what communism did for them.

the well-being of the community is more important to them than the well-being of the individual (themselves). They don't believe in capitalism

Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production.
It can be considered a branch of the broader socialist movement.
