How old are you? It would depend on that. You can ask your teacher for suggestions. "The Life of Pi" was good.

Same here...wondering what kind of assignment and the age.
Here are a couple with a tough subject matter, but they're written well: The Lovely Bones (told from the POV of a 14 year old murder victim) and Lucky, a memoir about a young woman's rape on the last day of her freshman year of college. They are both written by Alice Sebold and are easy to read and treat a difficult theme with care.
Now, if you're talking middle school or early high school, you may have already tackled The Giver by Lois Lowry. There are two others in this trilogy: Gathering Blue and messenger. I liked the third one most of all. Gathering Blue follows a young girl who is physically disabled. In a time when you need to be in one piece to earn your keep, there are those that want to kick her out. She finds her place and makes some friends; the third book continues with a character from Gathering Blue and ties these two together.
Another good series is Scott Westerfeld's Uglies, Pretties and Specials. This is sort of science fiction - about a possible future. When you turn 16, you go from being an Ugly to a Pretty with an operation. Only problem...your physical looks aren't the only thing to change.
Have you read Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen? He also wrote a historical fiction novel called Soldier's Heart. I liked it alot - the story of a young boy leaving his home to join the service during the Civil War.
That's a wide array. Hopefully one of those will fit your criteria.

What grade are you in first of all?
What kind of books do you like?
That is a hard question to answer because every one has different tastes when it comes to books(fiction, non-fiction,
science fiction, self help, biographies.)
You might read the New York Times Book Review or Publishers Weekly to get ideas.
Ask your teacher if the school has suggested reading lists.
Browse your local bookstore or library and just see if a book catches your eye. Ask your friends also.
Hope that helps you out!

It depends on how old you are and what you need to do once you finish reading the book - like if you have to do a paper or a presentation.
I recommend any of Mitch Albom's books - Tuesdays with Morrie, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, One More Day
Hope this helps!

For any age, I would go with a Harry Potter novel, provided those books have not been banned by your school system. If you are younger, you can read and report at face value. If you are older, you will be able to delve into more complex facets of how it relates to mythology or how it translates as a coming of age series.

Let's Roll by Lisa Beamer. Her husband was killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. It is a very honest look at her life. It is inspiring because she is not angry about losing her husband and being left a single mom. She draws strength from her family, friends and religion. I read it for a college English class a couple of years ago. My son who was like 9 at the time started reading it too. I think it is appropriate for any age.
