The Vietnam War Memorial is located in Washington, D.C., it honors members of the United States Army who lost their lives during service and/or were MIA or unaccounted for during or after the war. The memorial consists of three parts: the Three Soldiers Statue, the Vietnam Women's Memorial and the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall. The Wall is the most recognized and well-known part of the memorial.
The memorial was completed into 1982 based on a design by architect Maya Lin, who was criticized for her involvement in the design because of her young age, her sex, and the fact that she was of Asian descent. Lin was not even named during the 1982 dedication ceremony of the memorial.
The memorial is located in Constitution Gardens, across from the National Mall and is just NE of the Lincoln Memorial. The VVM is maintained by the United States National Park Service and receives around three million visitors each year.
The design for the memorial began as a contest in 1980. In December of that year over 2500 people registered for the design competition with a cash prize of $50,000. In March of 1981, 1,421 of the designs are submitted and displayed at a hangar of the Andrews Air Force Base for the selection committee. Each entry was just numbered, so as to protect the identity of the author to preserve anonymity and prevent profiling. The entries were narrowed down to 232, then to 39, and finally to entry number 1026, Maya Lin's entry. Maya Lin was 21 year old architecture student at Yale University. The design lacked the certain elements that most tradition monuments had present, such as patriotic writings and heroic statues.
The wall is made up of two black granite walls, measuring 246ft 9 inches long. The granite came from Bangalore, India and was deliberately chosen for its reflective quality. One wall points toward the Washington Monument, the other toward the Lincoln Memorial.
