The following will work as long as it is not a washerless faucet. They rarely leak and are harder to repair.

Turn off the water in the house. Remove the knob on the faucet. You will see that the core screws in and there is a place to attach at wrench to remove it. When removed you will see a screw and a washer on the bottom. Go to a hardware store and get the washer replaced.

By all means do it yourself or get a friend to do it. A plumber will charge $50-$100 (£25-£50) to do it.

after running two plumbing companies for many years, it sound like your washer in your tub faucet needs to be replaced, or the entire faucet. Try the washer first. If you do have to replace the faucet itself, i would let the landlord know, he may let you do the work and take it off the rent. Also just so your know your water heater will run 24/7. Most think it gets hot and stayes hot till you empty the tank, this is a false statement, your heating elements run 24/7 to keep this water hot, so when you turn on the water it is hot not cold. If your elements were not keeping it hot, over time your water in the tank will go back to cold, hence is a good way to know your elements are going bad as you don't keep hot water for any lengh of time or none at all. hope this helps

If its started dripping then the washer almost certainly need replacing. Worst case is when the 'seating' has cracked or has furred up becasue of hard water. In that case then you might find it easier to replace the tap.

For non-ceramic washers, over tightening will eventually break the washer completly and you wont be able to turn it off at all.

nine times out of ten a shower/tub fawcet leaks (especially if only one side is causing the leak) it is because the stem has just come loose or the rear washer has rotted apart or the seat has chipped or cracked. its an easy fix, just buy a new stem and replace it-only costs around fifteen bucks and anybody can do it.

Barkley gave you the same info that I would have. The washer has gotten hard, or worn, or it tore. When people use too much force to shut off the water, it is hard on the seal, and will cause them to leak sometimes. good luck

Fix the faucet, either a washer if it's separate handle faucet, or a cartridge if it's a single handle faucet. A plumber can also do this work for you, if your willing to pay his costs.
