IT was a textile mill and it wove cloth using water power to drive the machinery. When Americans wanted to use the same machines here then entrepreneurs like Lowell had to steal the plans because the English would not share their technology. Lowell built a prototype on the Charles River in Waltham Mass and when he got it right he opened up large scale in Lowell Mass.

U need to specify what type of factory u are referring,Note the term factory does not necessarily mean a place where we manufacture goods by the use of machines,back in the days men had different factories that were manual powered meaning they had laborers who did all the work.when slavery was still in place the main product was cotton, the cotton would be stored in a building which we would refer to as a factory because they use to make things out of the cotton in this building,the two most earliest factories would be a wood factory where they would saw and make things out of wood and smelting factory where they would melt iron to make things such as weapons and farming tools etc u need to be more specific in what type of factory.
