You might have been seeing American eelgrass (see photo: http://www.lucidcentral.com/keys/APPW/html/vallisneria.html). It's related to the aquarium plant Vallisneria. It would have to have good lighting to do well in an aquarium. I tried it in a native tank once and it didn't grow all that well.

If you would want to try this (or anything else you collect) I'd advise keeping it in a separate tank, without fish, for several weeks. This could help you prevent spreading any possible disease organisms or snails to your tank. Otherwise, I'd get one of the aquarium varieties.

I would not put them if I were you because there might be parasites in the plants and snails and it will over popullate the tanks.

It is possible, the only problem i have is that they might be carrying disease-ridden parasites or snails. If you do consider getting some, quarantine them to determine if they contain organisms or not.
