You can't know for sure. It depends on at what point is a bird technically a chicken and at what point is the egg the "chicken egg".
Through evolution chicken evolved from another bird. At certain point the "bird" was 99.99% chicken then it mutated more to be officially a chicken. That mutation mostly likely came while it was in the egg.
Maybe the answer is at the same time.

Having long wondered the answer to this question, I set about to determine the answer in a scientific manner.

I purchased a rather large ball of twine and marked off a course of about 100 meters (I couldn't afford the tape measure), with two lanes clearly demarcated. I purchased a chicken and an egg and set them at the Start Line, and simulated the sound of a Starter's Pistol (I yelled "bang!"). The chicken came first.

However, I was not satisfied that a single test proved the answer to the question, so I had a friend carry them up to the top of a very tall (three story) building, and drop them off together. That time, the egg came first.

Since I was out of eggs at this point, I had to call the experiments off, but I do plan to discuss the matter with other scientific experts of my caliber over some barbecued chicken this weekend.

The egg. Each generation of whatever the chicken evolved from would have been modified for "survival of the fittest" and it would have hatched that way.
