Actually in most jurisdictions bicyclists already have to obey all the same laws as motorists by law - but it has been a low enforcement priority.
BTW- for all you bicyclist scofflaws - thank me and those like me for being observant and not running into you - especially when I used to drive for a living and had bicyclisist passing around my vehicle from both sides at the same time. NO excuse. Your time is coming - you won't be so lucky some day.

I have often wondered why they don't seem to think it necessary to stop at traffic lights and are immune to this traffic law when they travel on the same roads as cars. I'm guessing their answer would be, because it gives us time to get away from the traffic and build up a bit of speed on the road. Its still likely that traffic approaching from the other way will not see them or expect them to be in the road they are turning into and so I think it could possibly reduce the number of cycling road deaths per year if they were forced to abide by the rules. It still amazes me the number of people I see using the pavement as a cycle or skateboard path with no consideration for pedestrians. I'm pretty sure you aren't meant to use pavements either, even if there's no cycle path.

Uhmmm - let me think about this.......... Yes, a bike needs to stop just like a car - that's the problem with a lot of cyclists - they think that for some bizarre reasons, the same rules don't apply to them. They should also pay insurance so if they damage anyone's car by cycling too close then can pay for the damage. Perhaps some lights in the winter and getting off the pavements would make them a more favourable species too - imagine if us car drivers decided to mount the pavement to avoid the traffic!

Actually, in my state/city, the law is that bicyclists have to obey the same traffic laws as people in cars and on motorcycles. Of course, they completely disregard the stopping at stoplights. I do think they should stop at red lights for their own safety.

you are right at the moment there is no law that requires a pedel cyclist to stop at a red light on the UK highway. I used to do a lot of cycling until some spotty oik nicked my very expensive racing bike, but yes they should, firstly pedestrians expect all traffic to stop and secondly the cyclist may put thier life and the life of other road users in danger by entering a converging traffic lane.
It is a crazy situation that is only just being redressed.

I don't know if you are in the UK, but if a cyclist goes through a red light whilst riding his bike, he is braking the law. But our police are two lazy to do anything about it. But there again, how many time do you see a cyclist on the road! Most ride on the pavement!

I live in Wetern BC, Canada. We have a law that bycle riders must obey the traffice signs as well as the traffice lights. This law has been in affect for many years. I totally agree with it.
