I think the first step is to see if it can be a psychological disorder. If there is an extensive rule out of any other psychological disorder, then one could start to entertain the possibility of Demonic possession, or that it is a psychological disorder that can't be figured out easily. I am not sure that I believe in Demonic Possession, but then again, my not believing in it does not make it impossible.

The reason the bible doesn't speak of psychological disorders is because, back in its day, nobody knew about such a thing and tended to believe that all the crazies were either demon-possessed or prophets of the gods. So, to answer your question, the distinction between (A) psychological disorders and (B) demonic possessions is that (A) is real and treatable while (B) is a primitive explanation of what we now know to be (A).

People today don't attempt to make any kind of distinction between psychological disorder and demon possession, because demon possession is already assumed to be an impossibility. The idea of demon possession came from more superstitious, less scientific times. Now everybody wants to know, how can you prove it? If you can't prove it, it's only for "superstitious" people to believe.

Well, if you so chose to believe in demonic possession, keep a skeptical mind about it. Many people claim that they see demons, only to stop seeing them after some serious medical treatment (pills!). Signs of paranoia, illogical thought and strange remarks are often considered signs of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. As far as other hallucinations - look for patterns, if you can. Does the person obsess over certain things? Is their past stressful? Signs of a psych disorder.

If you notice their eyes change to a very bizarre color or something inexplicable occurring nearby, that might be possession.

I would suggest cat scan to check brain for any disorder first. Demon possession would probably be evident with supernatural powers and different voices. I worked in a prison for several years and saw a little evidence of this so I'm not laughing. Best to seek excellent religious council if that be the case.

First thing you would need to to is to prove that demon possession does in fact occur. There is alot of evidence that proves psychological disorders, albeit genetics, brain function, hormones, etc.
