I think most women (at least the ones I've talked to any way) absolutely hate having their periods. I found it to be more annoying but that was because I didn't learn until much later how to control some of the messiness of it and the cramping that occurs with it.
But if the flow is too heavy or the cramping is so bad that the woman can't function then she needs to have it evaluated by a dr. And yes, the pill is one option and one of the things it does is to help regulate the periods in the hopes of easing the amount of flow and the cramping.
As for the pill messing up the body, like with all other medications it has side effects and most of them are reversable when the medication is stopped. If your dr ever should suggest the pill please ask a lot of questions so that you can feel more comfortable with understanding just how the pill works when it is used to treat medical problems such as endometriosis for example.

Yah it's a real pain. I think I'm relatively lucky because mine are very regular. BUT the cramps and moodiness are a real mess to deal with.
Birth control stops the cramping for a time, tho I still would have periods. But eventuall on the pill, my periods would become "odd" and then I'd start having a different kind of cramping than when I didn't take the pill. The doctor couldn't/wouldn't explain the differences so I've stopped taking the pill for the same reasons you don't want to go on it in the first place. The birth control pill is derived from petroleum based hormones (petro-estrogen) which really is messing up the fish in the streams because when we take the pill, we pee the hormone and it goes into the water supply. If it's messing up the fish, what do you think it does to our bodies?
Soooo --- good luck and keep working for alternative ways to manage it.
Really, it's part of how your body works so there should be a way to experience it in a way that isn't so hateful -
p.s. I'm sooo looking forward to menopause now that my kids are grown and having kids of their own LOL!

I hate it, and I did go on birth control. A 3-month shot that actually lasted a year before it started wearing off. And I still had cramps & spotting every month, lower level cramps, but lasted longer than normal. Plus I gained 20-25 pounds. There's gotta be a way to stop it that doesn't screw up your system!
PS: Ever seen Richard Jeni's impression of a period? Look for it, it's hilarious!

Hate it! Everyone hates it. So went on Norplant (no longer available), twice and never got it -- and sure as hell didn't miss it. After the Norplant have been on Dep ever since. Some rare and ery light breakthrough bleeding a couple of times a year, but other than that, still no period. Thank god I don't have to deal with that!

I always hated it as I did not have a cycle that came at the exact same time every month so I never knew for sure what day I would get it. I am post menopausal now and love not having to buy tampons and use them every month. I have to buy for my daughter now but that is ok.............it her not me that has the period every month LOL

Of course it's one of those things that I don't think anyone takes great pleasure from. However, why won't you go on the pill? It does have other benefits besides preventing an unwanted pregnancy - lighter/nearly non-extistent periods, cramps are greatly reduced, some brands even claim to help clear skin.
