There was a tv movie in the early 70s called 'The Voyage Of Yes' with Desi Arnez JR and Mike Evans about 2 guys from different races taking off together on a sailboat from California to Hawaii. It was an excellent movie! My question though is Do You Know The Name/Artist of that song in the movie about a 'hammer and a nail'? I loved this song but don't know the name or who it's by. Help! :-)

I think the song goes something like "...if I were a hammer and you were a nail..." :-)

Relevance - Then and Now (post 6)

June 12, 2005

I missed Saturday night (again) so it's a little past time, but here's another posting of "Relevance - Then and Now" where, I take classic rock songs from the past and post the lyrics to see if they have become relevant again. This week, at the suggestion of Crabletta over at The Curmudgeonly Crab, we'll take a look at Pete Seeger's classic "If I Had a Hammer." The song was actually a collaberation between Seeger and his "The Weavers" bandmate, Lee Hayes. It was 1949 and the two were at a meeting of People's Songs, Inc., a musicians' union Seeger had started to bind labor movements and folk music in a relationship that would advance both. During the meeting, Seeger and Hays passed a piece of paper back and forth as they collabertaed on the lyrics for "The Hammer Song".
If ever there was a controversial song, this was it. Many believed the Hammer stood for the Hammer on the Soviet flag (wouldn't Tom "the Hammer" DeLay love that!). On September 4, 1949 there was a concert at a venue in Peekskill, NY. The bill included Seeger and Paul Robeson. The concert had been advertised in a Communist newspaper and the locals were not too happy. Although there was no incident during the show, (Robeson sang "Old Man River" and Seeger sang "The Hammer Song") afterward is a different story. The artists were viciously attacked. Seeger escaped covered in glass and his car dented with rocks.

Seeger and the Weavers were blacklisted by the FBI and the Right-Wing magazine "Counterattack" but they couldn't keep their music down. In 1962, "The Hammer Song" now called "If I Had a Hammer" was recorded by Peter Paul & Mary who took it into the Top 10. This "Communist sympatheizer" song is now consider part of Americana and is included in nearly every American Folk Song book printed. Here now are the lyrics to Pete Seeger and Lee Hays' song.

If I had a hammer
I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening
All over this land
I'd hammer out danger
I'd hammer out a warning
I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

If I had a bell
I'd ring it in the morning
I'd ring it in the evening
All over this land
I'd ring out danger
I'd ring out a warning
I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

If I had a song
I'd sing it in the morning
I'd sing it in the evening
All over this land
I'd sing out danger
I'd sing out a warning
I'd sing out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

Well I've got a hammer
And I've got a bell
And I've got a song to sing
All over this land
It's the hammer of justice
It's the bell of freedom
It's the song about love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

"If I were a Carpenter" is the song & it was sung by many artists. It was written by Tim Hardin & he first performed it. Then later on by mainly Joan Baez, Bobby Darin, Johnny Cash, The Four Tops, The Small Faces, Andy Kim, John Holt, Robert Plant even; but also was sung by a whole slew of others. It is a tradition American Folk Song that came outta the 60's. Many counrty & rock or R&B artists have used it from one time or another. The one in the movie I think is sung by "Brother" Bob Segar from the Smokin' O.P.'s LP. Hope that helps you find the peace that you are seeking. Keep it Real.
