Can you give me a range/average:

What database size?
How much memory?
How much badwidth?

I am talking about a typical 1,000 member forum with avatars allowed.

Actually the size of the database is small for text and gets large for images so it all depends on what gets posted.

I would tell you to simply start out and see what happens, these are scalable items so you are not stuck with what you start with.

Most hosting packages will allow this to run.
I would get one with at least
500 megs of space. 12megs allocated for php and the best bandwidth offer you can find. (you wont use more than 2-10gigs in most cases)

If you are setting up your own server you need to get a server that has 512 megs (min) ram, 80 gig Hd, and at least a T1. the t1 can be shared with other servers.
