No, they haven't done away with double-decker buses, but they HAVE done away with the old Routemaster buses, which are those very old-fashioned-looking ones first designed in the mid-1950s and rolled out into full-scale production in the late 50s and early 60s (the last Routemaster was built in 1968). Here's a picture of one, so you know what I mean: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.terragalleria.com/images/uk/uken35785.jpeg&imgrefurl=http://www.terragalleria.com/europe/london/london-transportation/picture.uken35785.html&h=476&w=326&sz=44&hl=en&start=17&um=1&tbnid=8y_DOv3tqv1kBM:&tbnh=129&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3Droutemaster%2Bbus%2Blondon%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN

Despite being beloved by locals and visitors alike, Routemaster buses were phased out a little in the 80s and 90s, but it wasn't until 2003 when they started to be withdrawn altogether, in order to replace them entirely with buses that would be, for one thing, be more conducive to passengers using wheelchairs. Over the course of 2003, 2004, and 2005, Routemaster buses were gradually replaced by more modern vehicles, with the last one being taken out of operation on December 9, 2005. It was in the media a fair bit, thanks to the big red Routemaster buses being a fairly iconic London symbol, so I'm not surprised you'd heard about it.

That's not to say, however, that London doesn't have red double-decker buses anymore -- they just have a more modern version of the Routemaster, called "bendy buses," which you'll see all over the place if you're in the capital, and which are easy as pie to jump on if you want to get from A to B.

If you really want to ride a Routemaster, however -- and many people are very nostalgic about them -- you can take one of the two Heritage routes, which use the most recently refurbished Routemaster buses and follow two central London routes: Heritage route 9 runs from the Royal Albert Hall to Aldwych, and Heritage route 15 goes from Trafalgar Square to Tower Hill. They run every 15 minutes from 9:30am to 6:30pm. You can use the London Transport Journey Planner to plan your trip on a Routemaster (the link is below.)

Hope that helps! Have a wonderful time in London.

Dont panic, there are still plenty of double-decker buses...

What they did do away with about a year ago was the older type, which had been in use since the 60s, with the open space at the rear where passegers could jump on and off and a conductor who collected the fares.

Now all modern double-deck buses have driver-operated doors and no conductors, because you pay as you get on.

London is full of buses. The old style Routemaster buses were taken out of general service a few years ago, however, they still use the odd one on one or two of the routes. The newer buses are also red in colour but more energy friendly.
