the O is not silent in some cultures.. but here in the US it is so 'a' is the proper way to do it.

Is this a trick question? I think if you write the word opossum you'd put an 'an' in front of it. If you spoke the word opossum in a sentence you'd leave it out. I don't like to talk about opossums though because one hissed at me one time and scared the heck out of me............I always pronounced the O in it though so now I'm really confused.

Well, actually the 'o' isn't silent in the word opossum; you must pronounce it. And yes, put 'an' in front of it.
Now, if you use the form 'possum' as many, if not most, people do, then you use 'a' in front of it.
A possum but an opossum!

The O isn't silent. Many people say possum but it isn't the correct pronunciation. Regardless of sound 'an" belongs there.

No, the sound is what matters, not the letter.
Just like it is "an honor," even though honor starts with an "h."
