Well, there was MLK's wondrous "I Have A Dream Speech " in 1963. There was the Vietnam War and the assassination of MLK. It all depends on what is important to you as an individual and it also depends on your background. I was only 8 years old in 1963 but I have never forgotten where I was and what I was doing as the news of John Kennedy's assassination began coming over on TV. I was in a nurse's residence (visiting my mother who was a nurse) and sitting in the TV lounge. I was a little 8- year old kid sitting in a room with around 25 or 30 nurses, most of them in full uniform just coming off or about to go on duty - all watching TV and suddenly the entire roomful of nurses broke out weeping and bawling. It was scary then and surprising now because we were in a small British town (Grimsby) and these ordinary provincial British women were crying over the murder of an American President.
