I believe cockfighting should be absolutely and totally legal. Judging by your answers most of you know nothing of the sport. I only ask that you learn some truth before making any judgment. Gamecocks are not forced to fight, despite popular belief. They have been raised for the last millennium for the sole purpose of fighting. They do so naturally, and have to be restrained at a very early age, of about six months old, or they will kill each other. I have witnessed this myself.
Gamecocks usually are raised in very spectacular environment, billions of chickens are raised every year in slaughterhouses, their raised in the very worst of conditions, and at nine months of age their throats are cut and not a word is said about it. Gamecocks are raised with the best of medical care, the best of food, and the best of almost everything a chicken could want. Around 25% of those raised will be asked to fight, and probably no more. They fight naturally as I have said earlier, and need no extra incentive.
Either way this is not an issue the federal government was created to make judgment on, this is an issue that should be left to the states, and until 2002 it was. Louisiana should keep it, and all other states should offer the few citizens who would partake in the activity the chance to do so. This is mostly a rural Southern, and hispanic sport. This is more of a rural vs. urban struggle, very few people raised in rural environments condemn cockfighting, only those with no exposure to animal agriculture dislike the sport, mostly out of ignorance. Very little money is made from cockfighting, except in the general economy.Thank you and God bless you all.
P.S. this website contains some research about cockfighting, please view it, as most of you would view a biased source containing the other sides arguments.

Cockfighting is illegal in most of the US because of the animal cruelty issue. The birds are injured, even killed and for what, a betting parlor? Possibly one has to be raised in a culture which permits it to view it as a "sport," but I did not grow up with soccer or Jai Alai, yet both are entertaining to watch or bet on.

49 states have banned cockfighting as cruel. Why doesn't Louisiana get the message and join the rest of the country.

Cockfighting is Illegal. Doesn't matter whether or not it should be legal or illegal. The fact is, it is illegal.
Personally, I think it is a sickening blood sport that has no merit at all.

Is cockfighting using chickens to fight each other or fighting against another person with your..cocks? If it is concerning chickens, then yes it could be deemed animal abuse. If it was fighting in a personal place it would be up to the person. In a public place the government would intervene. They would also become involved if one of the people was hurt.

Cockfighting, bull fighting, dog fighting, calf roping, horse racing and jumping. these are all sports where animals suffer for man's entertainment. Sick, very sick! People need to have their heads examined if this is what they want to do.

I feel very disappointed with the fact that if I ever have kids, I'll never be able to bring them to a cockfight. It almost brings me to tears thinking about those valuable lessons that they'll never be able to learn now because then valiant sport has been banned... Such a shame...
Thank god I'm still allowed to shoot defenseless animals! Those deer will get their just desserts...

It should be kept illegal. There is nothing worse than betting which animal can rip the other one apart and in pain. That is bloodthirsty.
