Write the ground state electron configurations of the following ions:

Au+ (I got [Xe] 6s2 4f14 5d8, told me I was wrong)
Ni2+ (I got [Ar] 4s2 3d6, told me I was wrong)
Mn2+ (I got [Ar] 4s2 3d3, told me I was wrong)
Zn2+ (I got [Ar] 4s2 3d8, told me I was wrong)

I have had no trouble with the anions, only the cations?
Why am I wrong and what are the correct answers, please?

silver ion is [Kr] 4d10

Nickle ion is [Ar] 3d8

Mangnese is [Ar] 3d5

Zinc is [Ar] 3d10

The s-orbitals tend to go first, so all you need to do is reinstate the d orbitals and remove the s-orbital and in case your answer would be right.

Simple - there must never be any outer level s electrons in any ions. Take them off first.
