I don't believe so.
The difference is that R & R is popular, loud, noisy, and expensive; it generally leads to substance abuse and children with unclear parentage.
'Alternative music, on the other hand, can be played by a two-year old, using a wooden spoon or a ladle while banging on the pots and pans in your kitchen; it generally leads to a desire to play 'Rock & Roll'.

No. Alternative is a genre that came about in the 80's. It was originally an alternative to synthesized, new wave music. Whereas rock, of course, was invented in the 50's.

Alternative music is like farting, burping, making noises with your armpits and such. You might as well put a mic to your pots as the food was cooking and ripping a CD out of that.

Rock music is a more broad (higher level) description, so yes they're the same. Heavy Metal is "rock", Elvis is "rock", alternative is "rock", even Garth Brooks is PROBABLY "rock" (more than country?).
