If you live in England you should try for a European Computer Driving Licence, if you are unemployed then your local authority may even pay for the course, your local Adult & Community Learning College will normally provide this course and it includes more than just Word and Excel including PowerPoint, Outlook and basic Windows use.

One course I found really helpful was the Personal Trainer series from OReilly! Comes with an interactive CD (guides you through the screen motions), self-paced, doesn't take long...not all that expensive.
