I see a lot of people use it, but it costs money every month. What does AOL have that is so special?

Two things: (1) It comes "bundled" with every PC sold (wedded to Microsoft, available with "Easy Internet Startup"...free trial version) (2) Free trials widely available elsewhere (like, online, in some stores, etc.

Another thing that may be said "for" AOL is that their software digs itself deep into a system and is very difficult fully to remove.

AOL was the biggest dialup 56k ISP there was. Once DSL and Cable was given to the major public it really went down. It tried to keep itself alive by adding "high speed" but it really didnt make it. Some people cant afford high speed internet so AOL is always the next alternative.

It has been around since the start of internet's poplularity.

The only reason it is still popular is because of name recognition.

In reality, AOL does nothing more than turn something that is simple and straightforward into something that is annoying with the illusion of convenience and simplicity.

All ISPs cost money. Unless there are still a couple of free providers left out there. They just provided internet access. And then offered other utilities with that.
I think a lot of people use AIM, their instant messenger, and their big selling point now that a lot of people are switching to broadband through their cable company or dsl through their phone company is that they claim to offer better service and virus/spam blocking.
But really, you don't need it, unless you don't have access to the internet yet and want to use them.
