Mind refers to the collective aspects of intellect and consciousness which are manifest in some combination of thought, perception, emotion, will and imagination.

There are many theories of what the mind is and how it works, dating back to Plato, Aristotle, Adi Shankara, Siddhārtha Gautama, and other Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers. Pre-scientific theories, which were rooted in theology, concentrated on the relationship between the mind and the soul, the supposed supernatural or divine essence of the human person. Modern theories, based on a scientific understanding of the brain, see the mind as a phenomenon of psychology, and the term is often used more or less synonymously with consciousness.

The question of which human attributes make up the mind is also much debated. Some argue that only the "higher" intellectual functions constitute mind: particularly reason and memory. In this view the emotions - love, hate, fear, joy - are more "primitive" or subjective in nature and should be seen as different in nature or origin to the mind. Others argue that the rational and the emotional sides of the human person cannot be separated, that they are of the same nature and origin, and that they should all be considered as part of the individual mind.

In popular usage mind is frequently synonymous with thought: It is that private conversation with ourselves that we carry on "inside our heads." Thus we "make up our minds," "change our minds" or are "of two minds" about something. One of the key attributes of the mind in this sense is that it is a private sphere to which no one but the owner has access. No-one else can "know our mind." They can only know what we communicate.

Brain

brain, or encephalon (Greek for "in the head"), is the control center of the central nervous system, responsible for thought. In most animals, the brain is located in the head, protected by the skull and close to the primary sensory apparatus of vision, hearing, equilibrioception, taste and olfaction. While all vertebrates have a brain, most invertebrates have either a centralized brain or collections of individual ganglia. Primitive animals such as sponges do not have a brain at all. Brains can be extremely complex. For example, the human brain contains more than 100 billion neurons, each linked to as many as 10,000 other neurons.

The brain is the organ that is enclosed in the skulll of an animal... the actual tissues and cells. The mind is the cognitive label given to the brain, by poeple, to help with comunication and discription. It also allows people to believe that there si a larger difference between humans and other animals. Everything has a brain, but some would say that only being capable of thought and the expression of those thoughts have a mind.

I think that many of those answering may be confusing mind with brain. Your brain is an amazing organ it controls our muscles, respiration, pulmonary function and a host of other lesser known functions, but it does not think.

Thought is a function of mind that exists independent of anything physical. What appears to be the brain thinking in brain function imaging and other brain measuring attempts is only blood flow being measured to the part of the brain that acts as an interface between the mind and the body. This is the secondary function of the brain after regulating bodily functions. It acts as the interface, or the mind body connection.

Without it there would be no way for the nonphysical mind to exert any control over the physical body.
It is interesting that science has done its best to overlook this fact for so long. The silly idea that thought is some magical function of some mysterious electrochemical reaction is so vague as to be hilarious. There are several ways to disprove this theory beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Being nonphysical in source your mind is in no way effected by the death of the body and loss of the mind body interface, or brain.

Love and blessings.

Depending on what your exactly going for, people distinguish brain and mind in a biological and philosophical sense. When people speak of the brain, it is usually spoken about in the sense of neurons and chemical processes that can be described in a more scientifc manner. The mind, on the other hand, is seen more as a philosphical idea. To put in better words, the mind is seen as something apart from the body that reflects on ideas, thoughts, and feelings. This is a pretty general difference that people make between brain and mind but the debate goes on whether one or the other actually exists. Hope this helped.

Mind is the brainchild of the brain!

Let me explain, Brain controls all the body functions, including thinking. In the primitive days, nobody knew biology very clearly, So much so that they invented ways to 'understand' things in a way it can be easy. Simple people like them had difficulty believing that an organ made of flesh and blood (the brain) can do such marvellous things as thinking, analysing, distinguishing, philosophising and so on.

So, to make things to be easily understood, they started distinguishing the mind (conscience) from the brain. The fact is that, it is their brains that thought up such an idea!
Interesting na?

Let me know if this helped!

I agree with the aforementioned answers.

When someone uses the term "brain", they denote the organ in the skull. Whereas when someone uses the term "mind" they denote the invisible and sub-conscious force and phenomenon that is the emanation of the "brain". In many respects the brain and mind are interdependent. Of one's brain is healthy, that will be manifest in how the person's mind developes. If someone's brain is unhealthy (eg. if they have high sugar levels and toxins within their brain), that will also become evident in how the mind developes because it shall encourage negative thoughts.

brain has the physical presence i.e. made up of cells and blood vessels and it is like a hardware. the mind is like the software that contains ones emotions and it has no physical exsistance. It can be studied only when we interact with a person either orally through letters or online.

Brain is yhe physical organ with all its components, with defined location (anatomical) and physiology, that is the center of the neuronal and chemical activity.
Mind, is a metaphysical (non palpable) concept, that makes us conscious of our surroundings and self, with all of the comsequences of that fact.

its a re submission, cause jk could not see his submission with your other q.

okay, let jk try something that perhaps not coming under the purview exact, but perhaps something leading as our scriptures say "Anumanena". Let us start from the far end.

Perhaps all these analogies can be said to be an art or game of integration or derivation of Vedanta and Vedas. Calculus was discovered by Indians time immemorial, even can be traced back to the ages of Vedas, which perhaps can be told to be the first integration of concepts of Divinity within the limits of good practices.

The Visions that our sages had, the first Integration of Divinity put out in the four Vedas, then the derivation of those Visions to Vedanta .. that everything is Divine only .. whatever the good and controlled practices according each one's tastes with love for all ... whatever the different shapes of Idols made Gold, the VALUE (you may also read Verified and Aligned Link within with THAT Ultimate Entity) is associated with the actual amount of Gold (or the Innate Connectivity) in the Idol.

So the basic foundation is various types of Integrations and Derivations of Divinity to form different kinds of egotistic I dolls (Idols) at different levels from the Fundamental Divine I.

Most of the times as all the charecteristics of all the variables are unknown we go for partial integration and derivation based on known variables keeping or assuming other variables who's effects on the system or the life equation are not fully known to us as constants.

Sathya Sai Baba say the equation of Life is this.

Life + Desire = Man

Life - Desire = God

He also said Mind is only a bundle of thoughts.

There are five sheaths (may be the integrals of Divinity) that can be called "Annamaya Kosam"(the body sheath), "Pranamaya Kosam" (The sheath of Vital Air), " Manomaya Kosam" (The Mental sheath), "Vijnanamaya Kosama" (The Intellectual Sheath) and the "Anandamaya Kosam" (The All pervading Divine Bliss perhaps)

It is also said that Body ie controlled by the Vital Air Principles should be put under the command of Mind and the Mental Principles should be controlled by the Intellectual Principles and the Intellectual Principles should be under the Divine Command of Divine Bliss, the Eternal Charioteer. Even when there is a Hierarchy each sheath is also controlled simultaneously and independently by the Eternal Charioteer ( The Partha Sarathy ). Arjuna's intellect may say, Oh' Divine Lord, please move chariot, and horses to this or that place, Oh' God, the Controller of sense threads, shall we move to that area of battle field, it seems to my intellect that, that area may be suitable for us according to our strengths and tastes (SWOT analysis as intreme derivative (or is it the integral) of these Vedic principles as our Modern day Management have deduced (or integrated)) and Lord Krishna may or may not take Arjuna to that battlefield then. It was clearly seen when Arjuna wanted to fight with Karna so much, but Lord Krishna won't allow until the Ghatotkacha was killed. Of course you must be aware of this story. Perhaps this aspect is something ie missed among the partial derivations of modern day management.

Now the integrals of Divine into some beautiful practical analogy put forward by Vedas, we have seen. Now Imagine the Sun Rise and Sun Set, Vedas treat them as it is with a Vedantic knowledge that Sun niether sets nor rises and is always there. This concept is of higher use when we transcend the limits of Earthly Sesations. While with the sensory perceptions on earth for a good and better presentation of picture it is always better to accept the Vedic Sun Rise and Sun Set as good practices and Real (or at least Partially Real (Mithya, the indescribable) for that matter) with a Vedantic Core that All are Divine and Sun is always there. This know how of Vedantic Core always help us to engineer out a lot of things to avoid confusion. For example the confusion of different Time Standards in different places just like the different religions perhaps.

Now let us also see here some of those intreme partial derivatives and integrals of Vedas and Vedanta as we call the Scientific explanations.

The Mind is nothing but a feeling constituted in Brain, more fundamental derivative to it into the Vedanta is the Brain also is Divine.

But in the intreme sphere of partial derivatives, The right side brain is the reason for all our emotional aspects and picturesque memory, artistic thoughts etc etc.

The left side of the Brain is more logical and mathematical in nature, perhaps also capable of finding derivatives and integrals of different aspects, more contributing to so called rational behaviour.

Without the Sathya Sai Thought for the day, how can this long answer be considered complete. So here it comes, perhaps has revelence over here.

As you may be aware the Upanishad Mahavakyam "Prajnanam Brahma" (Consciousness is God) is considered the Vedantic essence of Rigveda, the Veda ie meant for the Thoughtful Visionaries, the Real Brahmins.

Sathya Sai Thought for the Day,

"How ignorant man is! He does not realise that the five elements present in him are the very forms of Divine. It is foolishness on his part to look for God outside ignoring his innate divinity. Divinity is present in every being. The life principle that flows through each and every nerve of the body is verily divine. The life Principle that sustains our body is Prajnana. Hence, it is said, Prajnanam Brahma (Consciousness is God)."
