From most to least preferred, for me:

1. Houston: Live here now, LOVE IT, great people, arts and culture abound; beaches, swamps, bayous, hills, and pine forests can ALL be found here. You just have to live here to understand.
2. Austin: Moving here very soon. Great music scene, cool strips such as 6th St., 2nd St., SoCo, and the drag, UT sports, laid-back friendly folk, beautiful parks, even more beautiful women.
3. Seattle: yes, these people might be a bit "distant," but certainly helpful and polite. I've felt VERY welcomed there before, have great friends from there. SO MUCH more than Pike Place and the Sonics!
4. Nashville: still pretty friendly, decent live music scene, Vandy is a great school, but Downtown could use some cleanin' up.
5. Cincinnati: the only NE city I'd ever consider living in. Jungle Jim's, Coney Island, and WEBN are very unique to this Queen City.
6. Louisville: can you say RUDE & closed? And KY is "that friendly." Hah!
7. Philadelphia: ditto Louisville

The Queen City has a lot more to offer than just the few things.you mention, including The Cone, Graeters Ice Cream, Cincy Chili, Kings Island, the Reds and Bengals, Great Wolf Lodge, the ATP Tennis Tournament, the Underground Freedom Center, etc etc etc. Way more than meets the eye,
Id list them at Cincy, Austin, Seattle, Houston, Nashville, Philly, Louisville.

North Carolina. I know it isn't on the ranking, but if you have never been here, it is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I have lived in CA, WA, IL, AZ, England, UT, Spain, and now N.C. While Utah is beautiful, I couldn't STAND to live there, England was great and loved it, but it isn't a state, but NC is hands down the best place I have ever lived in the United States, and the prettiest. No complaints here, (cept for the taxes....)

All you listed is big cities. Why not get away from the rat race and live nearby, so you can enjoy the big cities on easier time?

Beaumont, not Houston. (Two of my best friends lived in Houston, one still.)
Blanco, not Austin. (I have relatives there.)
Lakewood, not Seattle. (Lived in Pierce County 2 years, changed my life)
Dresden, not Nashville. (family friends live in Dresden and love it.)
Fort Thomas, KY, not Cincinnati. (dated a girl in Fort Thomas)
Frankfort, not Louisville. (A good friend from the Navy is from Frankfort.)
Nowhere near Philly/New York. (speaks for itself)
