I have to agree with you, I think we live in an age now where they are no longer needed.

Pardon this intrusion from across the pond, regarding an issue that is of no business to us in the first place. The abolishment of the current constitutional monarchy would be as much a waste of time as castrating a corpse. As head of state (do not confuse with head of government)the monarch adds a serenity and dignity, that no elected official, certainly not a politcian, could emulate. Every society needs some pagentry. In the US our royalty is the hollywood idols (embarrasing to say) GB has the real deal. With no real power (beyond an extensive person wealth) there is nothing but a positive outcome from the monarch's presence. Now personally, I hope that the Queen reigns until she decides to abdicate in favor of her grandson. God Save the Queen!

Immagine. In the past if the kings were so bad then the whole country would revolt. King cannot do as they please because they can't get away with it. Although not as bound as politician by votes. They couldn't go around pissing people off willy nilly... What would the british nation anthem be?
God save Tony Blair-air-aire
Long live our Gracious Tony
God Save Tony
Or God save wayne roo-oo-ney
long
you get the picture
no, royalty serves a purpose.. and not just national identity
does the queen rule now by fighting wars, being cruel etc,
the monarchy has evolved to keep up with the times. MAYBE Their budget should be reduced, If they have one? do they?
After Charles the first was executed, the country had nothing to keep it together, Men fighting wars were thinking who the hell am i fighting for? With his son crowned king the country once again knew In battle, I am fighting for the good charles II etc. FOR KING AND COUNTRY.
The monarchy does have powers
In theory the queen could stop any law she chooses that is passed by parliament. but no monarch has since th 1700's
Instead they spend time better by improving the countries relations internally and abroad. The go around cheering people up. Are they really causing you harm?
And is this something you truly beleive (down with the monarchy)? or is it something you've heard someone say but haven't really considered properly yourself.
Maybe it seems the royalty aren't good but they aren't bad either
END

You insult the British nation with your silly comments.
If the country thought that there was anything resembling a better option than our Constitutional Monarchy, we would have had it in place years ago - and you would probably be shouting for a Monarchy!
For all its faults the Monarchy has no serious rival.
God Save The Queen.

I say, we would be very foolish to do that. They really are `big bucks` earners for this country tourist -wise, and they are partly the reason we have remained stable as a country. We do not keep them in luxury as has been suggested, and whether they are `in-bred` or not, is hardly their fault. You would also be hard pressed to find many `ordinary` families who do not have foreign blood in their veins, these days. I do not know them personally, so I am not qualified to call them `stupid`and I consider it very rude to call them`in-bred`, it is very insulting; as usual, the person making these statements does not allow e-mails, if you are going to be negative about something you really should `put your money where your mouth is`. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but as adults, they should be able to express it without being rude about a subject, they obviously know very little about. There will come a time, when the UK is without a Royal Family, I am sure, but that time is not now.

I'd say you need to give us a reason for getting rid of them other than that you are a 'democratic republican'.

If you get rid of them, can we have them here in the US?
Seriously, I'm sick of politicians. We could do with some royalty to look after us and keep things running smoothly while the politicians all fluff each others feathers and run around like clacking like chickens.

Agreed. They are German imports and have outlived their usefulness.
How can the UK invade Iraq to bring them democracy when it doesn't even elect its own Head of State.
If people just want to retain them because they are tourist attractions it would be more profitable to have a Disneyland.

And replace them with a Bush or Blair type character. NO THANK YOU. We have enough trouble with politicians who think that they are the greatest thing since sliced bread without giving Cherie Blair the post of first lady, I used to think that Russian Presidents wives were ugly but.........................
