I never had one of the expensive long ones, I just used little ones-- one thin one under my belly, and usually another one between my knees, or if I raised my top knee up closer to my body, just under that one top knee. (Hope that makes sense-- lie down and try it out, maybe that'll be easier to understand.) I couldn't live without my pillows when I was pregnant!

I suggest sleeping in an almost sitting position, this is how I have been able to sleep best during pregnancy. Prop up a whole bunch of pillows or sleep sitting on your couch. I hope this helps, it is misearable towards the end when you can't find a comfortable position!
You can also try using a body pillow and kind of prop your belly on it so you can lay on your side more comfortably.

I had a healthy baby girl, so it didn't cause any harm. If you're not already, I'd try a pillow designed for pregnant women. It helped me sleep more comfortably on my side.

get a knee pillow it works great and that way your hips wont hurt. it helped me a great deal. i heard that its not best to sleep on ur back. i have a temperpedic head pillow but i used it for my knees. good luck.
