I have a commode in my house where the water fills in the tank after flushing, but continues to fill into the overflow tube causing the water to keep running. Any ideas on how I can fix this problem, or what component to check? Thanks for your time.

Sometimes mine does that too. I have to hit the flush handle a few times to stop it.
What causes it is the little rubber thing that closes the drain hole is not sealing it completly.
As I said just hit the flush handle a few times or if the rubber stopper is old and warped, you might have to replace it.

The problem is the float. It's set too high. Most toilets have the float on an arm. You can carefully bend the arm down in small increments and allow the tank to fill. Continue to adjust until the float stops the water flow before it gets to the overflow tube. If the float isn't able to stop the water, it might be worn out. Then you need to buy a new ballcock valve from the hardware store. It will have instructions on how to install it.

The problem is the fill-valve. It is not shutting off when the water in the tank reaches the proper level (about 3/4" below the overflow pipe). If it has an arm and ball, there is a screw on the end of the arm on the left side of the tank. Tighten it a bit at a time to get the proper water level. If it does not have ball and arm, it would be easier to just replace the fill-valve with a Fluidmaster 400A valve. About $7 at Home Centers. Really easy installation instructions included. Note: I would replace a ball/arm type if it was me with the Fluidmaster.

Check the float and the float rod. I've seen ballcocks that won't turn off if the water supply flow is too great! Is the float rod bent up slightly in the middle? This helps conserve water. If adjusting the supply line valve doesn't help, you may have to replace the entire ballcock assembly. Good luck! ;-)=

That can normally be fixed by either bending the float rod or adjusting a screw near the valve at the end of the rod. Pull up on the rod and see if the water stops. If it doesn't then the valve needs to be replaced.

I just fixed that in mine..
It is a combination of the seal at the bottom and the chain holding it up....
So you will need to replace it all for easier project...
You can get it at HomeDepot or Lowe's and it is very easy!
good luck

the plunger is set to high you need to lower it or bend the bar with the float downward so it fills up less.
