yea....playing basketball is horrible on the knees (especially playing on concrete) And thiers always a chance of injury, just as any contact sport......
But why wouldnt you try out for Varsity? What are you just going to lay on the sofa all day, just to be safe? everytime you get in a car it is dangerous, but we still do it. Eating unhealthy, in the long run is bad for your health, yet still majority of Americans do it. Try out for Varsity!!!

The benefit of exercise far outweighs the potential risk of injury in a sport like basketball. Of course proper coaching and training helps more than just playing street ball on your own.

Well depends on how bad you want it. If your not going to play hard and give it everything you got then it wont do much but emotionally break u down. If you do your best and slide for the ball play through twisted ankles then yes it will do damage. If you really want it thought you should plpay regardless of injury.

Basketball is tough on your knees and ankles more than anything else. Lots of running, stopping, pivoting, turning, jumping, and then running some more. I've been on crutches 5 times because of ankle or knee sprains because of basketball.

doing any sport at a high intensity rate frequently will wear out your body, if that is what you mean by damage.
