Seahorses are believed to have evolved from a common ancestor with the perches, bass, sticklebacks and cichlids. Syngnathids, which include the Seahorses, Pipefish, and Seadragons, evolved as a distinct family roughly forty-five million years ago.

It has gills, so as to be able to breathe.
