If you get a hoax message in your e-mail from someone you know, send them back a link to the page in snopes.com that debunks it.

EDIT: BUFF is correct, too. www.truthorfiction.com is also a good debunking site.

The primary way is to ignore them. Ignore and IMMEDIATELY TRASH FOREVER (not just remove to a trash-bin to-be-emptied-later) any unsolicited email or any email from an unknown source. Remember that, one should not send, in email, any info that one would not wish to be placed on a public billboard.

Another way might be, to set up a clearing house, where folks could report hoaxes. However, this could pose problems, whereby competitors could report each other as hoaxes. So the clearing house would have to be staffed by people who could investigate reports to ensure the reports themselves are not hoaxes.

- Never click any links in unknown emails.

- Never click any links or enter passwords into emails from apparent banks, PayPal, eBay etc

- Get IE7 (free download) and click Tools > Phishing Filter and turn it on so you know you are on genuine websites.

- Get anti-spyware and anti-virus from AVG from http://www.ewido.com and http://www.grisoft.com respectively. You probably already have an anti-virus but the spyware will protect your computer from certain hoaxes and Trojans.
