From my personal experience, I do not think Microsoft is a monopoly. The reason being that as long as Linux is available and the Mac continues to create havoc in the market place, there is competition in the market place. Also, Microsoft has many flaws, however, the programmers would rather work for Microsoft, than go out and create their own version of DOS. And for those that do try, don't try for long, because as soon as Microsoft catches wind of their developing, they are a smart enough business to offer them ridiculous amounts of money to eliminate them from the picture.

An example. Yahoo had the ability to buy Google for one million dollars at the early stages of its development. Had Yahoo bought Google, things would be a lot different in the Bay Area (headquarters). But, they didn't and Google took the offer off the table, and the rest is history.

If anything, this is a good business practice to consider. With enough money, you can eliminate 75% of the competition, but if you don't, then your company might become the 25%.

No, there is still competition from countless companies in every area.

It just seems that way because Microsoft can put out products in every field that meet or beat the specs of the competitors at an equal or lower price. So they're more successful obviously on a larger scale. And they become the standard for everything. The world runs on Windows and MS Office. Zune has more features than the iPod Video, and is $30 cheaper. XBox360 is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the PS3. Etc etc etc.

No, because they have competition in every one of their business units (browsers, word processors, ERP systems, operating systems, etc.).
