Contact the school, most will be able to help. There are also foreign student support groups at most schools that could provide information and support. You could also look for non-profit immigration organizations in the area. I know he is not immigrating but they would have good information.

He should not get into trouble while here - that's the first point. Our laws are pretty standard - don't do drugs, don't use prostitutes, don't gamble except in a licensed place, and don't drink unless you are over 21.

If he follows the normal rules of behavior, he needn't worry. If he is arrested for a crime at any point, a public defender can be appointed at no cost if he doesn't have money for a lawyer.

Well, if you really want to be on the safe side, I guess he could keep the contact info handy for his country's embassy here in the US. If he gets into some sort of bind, they would probably help him out. But even if not, those who cannot afford lawyers here are assigned court-appointed lawyers for free. (No need to register for one as soon as he lands.) And I'm sure whatever school he's attending has guidance counselors who could answer any questions he may have. And he could always read up on our general laws on the Internet before he arrives--though they will vary slightly from state to state. But in general, I'm sure he'll be just fine. Don't worry!

The university or college more then likely has a program or orientation set up .to inform your son of some basic laws, however if u wish there are several pre-paid legal resources available for minor infractions your son may get,, IE traffic infractions and such, research these sites, to make sure the pre-paid legal is what u will need and that your son can have immediate access,

As a foreigner it will be hard to get in to trouble, but there will be lots of things to side track, culture shock, difference in food, weather, and trying to make new friends......his training at home will surpass all that goes on around him/her. If he can link up with people of the same county or back ground in school, they should be able to advice him/her. They will be fine. Let him /her be prepared for silly questions.

if you have a family attorny here that you suggest perhaps he or she can suggest a firm in the area you son is going, however, the system is us is different. attorneys in practice have degrees enabling them all rights to litigate on any matter before the courts and they are numeroust. there will also be legal service of students where he will study, if not there will be free legal counsel in the town or city.

Simply use common sense and don't break the law, and he'll be fine.

Unlike other coutries, we don't arrest people for merely being different.
