I've started to work with a wonderful non-profit who wants some help with their web page. I've got XHTML/CSS experience, but she also wants some backend stuff done - fillable forms, a database and the likes. Can anyone refer me to their favorite references for MySQL/PHP - ones that would be understandable to a newbie? Books titles are also welcome.

html php and mysql is a good title with very clear examples and explanations. I can't find my copy, so can't check the author. This, plus the links below is all I've eve used, Started from scratch e few? years ago, and had a client/contact/enquiry database available online within 1 month at 2 to 3 days a week, and I'm not that clever.

I'm teaching myself php and MySQL as we speak. I'm using 2 books:
"PHP and MySQL for dynamic websites" by Larry Ullman
and
"Beginning PHP and MySQL 5 from Novice to Professional" by W. Jason Gilmore

I prefer the first one, but the two are quite different so I switch between the two when trying to really get a grasp on something.

I started of at:
http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_intro.asp

Great for the first few hours/days :)

If you would like a very good BOOK try Meloni
"Teach Yourself PHP/MYSQL and Apache in 24 hours".
And "PHP Fast and Easy Web Developement".

They are both really good and easy to read and understand and make great referrence material. Both are available at your local library, bookstore, or online store. They are worth the small investment.

I would suggest http://php.net and http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/index.html

php.net has any php functions you might need to use, and hotscripts has thousands of premade PHP scripts. I learned how to script by studying pre-made scripts like TextFileBB (http://tfbb.jcink.com/main/?act=textfileBB I chose a forum script because a forum has many PHP functions you might ever need, such as making a file, making a directory, how to use cookies, making a password gate, making user files for the password gate, etc.) and I am currently still learning, although i offer php support for some people because I understand quite a bit.
