My neighbor had multiple sclerosis and the last 6 years (she recently passed) she was not able to do anything - not even wink eyelids. She lied on the bed day & night with tubes and her husband took care of her. I would bring my 3 1/2 year old daughter over to visit on average once or twice a month.

Since my daughter only saw the lady lying in a bed not ever moving - I question if she ever thought it was a real person.

I just don't know how much I need to explain next time I visit and the deceased is no longer there.

Would a 3 1/2 year old even think this was a real person since the lady never talked, moved etc?

She may have thought that she was just sleeping. I am sure that she did realize that this was a living person. Whatever your belief concerning an afterlife...you could just explain to her that she had to leave (maybe, she will see her again someday)

Why under=rate your kid's intelligence? Of course she'd know a person, even if totally confined to bed!

Explain only to the extent of her question. NOT like this one:

A 4 -year old kid came back home after the first day at KG school. Immediately on entering the home, she excitedly asked:" Mommy, Mommy!
What is SEX?" The mother busy in the kitchen hastily took off her apron, and sat down to patiently explain sex to her 4 -year old for the next 30 minutes!

Finally the kid cried:" But Mommy! How can I write all that in this little Identity Card of mine ? I wrote my name, and age,

but SEX??" Ha ha ha!!
