The Roman alphabet (used for English among other languages) follows closely the order of the Greek alphabet upon which it is based.
Z (zeta) comes sixth in the Greek alphabet. The Romans had little use for the letter, so they relegated it to the end of their alphabet. (In fact, all of the Latin words I know of that contain Z are adopted from Greek words.)

When the Greek philosopher Barneyus Dinosaurus wrote a song 2000 years ago, he felt the order the letters were in were best that way. He also wrote a lster song about a gentleman who had a farm. It contained the lyrics "Old Mcdonald had a farm E I E I O". The earlier version was "Old Mcdonald had a farm E U N G F". Didn't really work.

hehe, its actually in that order because the Phoenicians put it in that order and passed it on to the Greeks and then the rest of the Mediterranean world. Hence the name the Roman alphabet. The original sequence was something like "alpha, beta, etc." and so on.
Why the Phoenicians put it in that order, I do not know.

There is no perticular order to alot of things. Alot of the time, it is because the creator chose it that way. I beleive this is how it is with the alphabet. Whoever first created decided he wanted 'A' first and 'Z' last.

'cause it was introduced that way. We should just be innovative and start a law that introduces it backwards. This would be great in driving the Fundey's nuts, since it would force them to rewrite some of the literature to read, "I am the Omega and the Alpha." The alpha (in Greek) means, the beginning. Beta, is the second of any series of things... So, there are some clues for you.

Numerical order was already taken and scrambled order was just too complicated to recite. And don't even consider ascending and descending order.
