My baby is 5 months and my cycle has not yet returned. A lot of moms I know have had theirs return shortly after they started solids or when their baby started sleeping through the night. As your baby is 6 months old, she could have reached one or both of those milestones recently. Did your mother breastfeed? A lot of women have their period return at about the same time as their mother's returned when she was breastfeeding their children.
Your cycle could start again and be perfectly regular or it may be irregular for the next few months. Don't worry about it either way. At the latest, a few months after your child weans your body will return to its normal pattern.
Congrats on breastfeeding for 6 months! Keep it up! :)

This is an event which varies GREATLY among mothers. Probably why there are often cases of that second baby sneaking up on you! You "shouldn't" start your period until after you stop breastfeeding. ("shouldn't" is a dangerous word when you are talking about anything hormonal) And likewise, you "shouldn't" be able to get prego while you are breastfeeding.
I have 2 examples of "shouldn't"s not working:
**my sis-in-law got prego when her boy was 8mos (was done having kids...oops!)
**my cousin has two daughters born in the same calendar year! (again...oops!)

You haven't had a period because of you breastfeeding. I didn't breastfeed with my daughter but my friend did. With me not breastfeeding I started after 8 weeks of having my daughter but with my friend that did breastfeed she didn't start her period again until she stopped breastfeeding, then it was about a month after when she started for the first time. Hope that helped you out a little!

I didn't get my cycle back until my son was nine months old, and it's still a little irregular. My mother told me she didn't get hers back for about a year. If you are concerned, I suggest buying both a home pregnancy test and an ovulation test. Maybe those can confirm if you're ovulating or possibly pregnant. If you're still concerned, I would suggest consulting your doctor.

I am mom to 4 who were all exclusively breast fed as babies between 3 - 7 months (depended on my schedule and when each baby was ready for solids). It is common for moms who exclusively breast feed to not begin their first period until sometime after their baby begins getting some of his/her nourishment from another source other than mom's breast. For me, I did not get a period until I was not breast feeding at all. This is not a fool-proof method of birth control, however, as ovulation can begin at any time. With my last baby, she was exclusively breast fed until she started solids at 7 months but I did not get a period until she weaned herself at 14 months. My husband had a vasectomy after her birth since she had been conceived when I had been on birth control pills for 11 years. Our older children were 18, 15, and 12 when she was born!

My daugter is about 7 months now and I just started my cycle again about 4 weeks ago. You will know when it comes because its just anyother period you have had. Your milk supply might also go down. It doesnt sound like you are having your cycle yet because you would know it.

It is different for all women, I was breastfeeding exclusively and during the night and mine came back at 5 months. Some women breastfeed parttime and don't get their period back until they stop breastfeeding, even if that is 2 years later.
Breastfeeding IS birth control if you follow the rules.

The cramping after you had the baby could've been contractions of the uterus brought on by the nipple stimulation. I didn't breastfeed exclusively, so I got mine period pretty quickly. You definitely can ovulate without knowing it. I've heard of so many women who found out the hard way that you can get pregnant while nursing.
