twice a year and after every hurricane. if you don´t, the dirt caught in side them will make them rust out, get holy and you will be replacing them, unless you have plastic, then the sun will make them brittle, and the cold weather will make them crack-you really have to take care of those unless you have lots of money to keep replacing them.
it also depends on where you live, how many trees are around, if the wind blows - like dust storms.
once a year or once every few years could be enough.

If you can't easily check to see if the gutters are clogged, I would recommend at least twice during the fall months. Once in the middle of fall, and once at the end. I would then recommend getting some kind of gutter guard so you wouldn't have to worry about it at all.
If you let the gutters get too full, the weight of leaves (especially wet after a rain) can pull the gutters down. Then it would be a big hassle to get them back up.

i am a siding and roofing contractor. you should clean the gutters before the winter weather comes, after all of the leaves have fallen. this will help prevent clogged gutters which can lead to ice dams and then roof leaks. buy yourself a good ladder and a ladder stabilizer so that you can do this work safely, or hire someone each fall. good luck.

It depends more on your landscaping than the age or height of your house. What could be getting in there to clog? Are you surrounded by trees? If so, every spring you should get up there and every fall after the leaf drop.

I clean mine once a year, at the beginning of winter.
In my case there are lots of trees around the house.
My brothers house has no trees and he cleans his once every two or three years.

Get a ladder. Every spring you should clean them out. If they are clogged they can cause major problems. It's gross to clean them but itdoesn't take long.

Check them each year cuz the leaves can really clog them. Dirt gets in there too and gets real sludgy.
