The fingerprints allow the employer to establish your identity and make sure that you are the person you say you are. Furthermore, it then gives them the opportunity to run the identity through different databases to detemine if you have a criminal record. Some jobs do this on their own; however, other employers are required by law to do this. For instance, banks are required by law to have the fingerprints of their employees searched since they are close to significant amounts of money.

Anyone who has committed a crime will have their fingerprints on record. They usually submit them to the State Police to see if you have a criminal record. This is just a standard background check--don't take it personally. My parents didn't do background checks at first. They had at least one employee who lied about her background, and it caused them a great deal of problems.

I would ask "May I ask what the fingerprinting is for?" If they say it is for a background check, they MUST have you sign a form giving them permission to do a background check.
