I feel the same way. I think this is a man thing.

There is a book, Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, that talks about how our decisions are really made in the blink of an eye.
Two individuals go into a boardroom seeking the position of CEO, one is tall, deep voice, full head of luxurious hair, the other candidate is 5'9", bald, and just pretty average looking. Statistics support that the board picks the big guy regardless of credentials in the majority of instances. The perception is this large man can protect them, protect their investment, it is almost a prehistorical point of view, but it is reality.
I am 5'9" and have been basically bald since high school and with the exception of women, it has been at times a challenge in perception. I know very few real women that look upon baldness in a negative way, sure there are a lot of shallow people who judge others on some preconceived notion. I keep in a #4 buzz cut now and although I am getting older I still see women look at me. Might just be the deep green eyes though.
I think marketers use sex to sell things and that is the reason. I believe if they did their research they would look for other ways to promote their products.

I agree with you. I know that most men are probably terrified of it. I can't speak for all women, but when I see a bald guy, I don't think, "Eeeeew--that's just nasty. Why doesn't he get some hair plugs or something??" Normally I don't think anything unless the guy has that little wispy fringe in the back that he's attempting to grow into a mullet, or, even worse, a bad toupee. A lot of men go bald. It's a fact of life! Nothing wrong with it.
On the flip side, what I don't like to see is men who shave their heads (on purpose) who have these lumpy, crooked heads. They need to let their hair grow!!

I agree. I know many nice looking balding men. Besides I think that after women get a little older, looks is really toward the bottom of the list on what I look for in a man and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Society makes it seem like women don't like all sorts of things about men: balding, slight to extreme over weight, nice guys, etc., etc.
There is such a stereotype on men and women's opinion of men in society that it really is downplaying the man's role in a relationship, and there is much less respect for men now than there was say 50 years ago. And in turn it is making men have less respect for women, just another vicious media fueled cycle.

Well, I guess not every man can be a Chris Daughtry or Jim Cantore or Michael Jordan, to name three very good-looking bald men who women seem to like. And not every man is confident, either. These commercials are trying to move products, no more or less. The good news is, you can be more powerful than 24 hours of commercials! :-)

Thanks for this post Sway. Bald(ing) is beautiful, and it has nothing to do with the real person which is what they should be looking at. Unfortunately I suffer from this ailment (could not find a bald avitar!). When I was between women in my life it became very obvious how shallow some women can be espeically about male baldness. My wife thinks it looks distinguished. :O)

I've heard it said that Americans (in the TV age) will never elect a bald President, and that was in regard to women voters. I don't know if that's true, but when you think about it, the last bald President was Eisenhower.

But if they did that, then the hair product companies that make products for bald men would be out of business!
It's the same reason fashion magazines tell women to get rid of their cellulite - it makes money for companies.
I agree. More men need to embrace it. Confidence is sexy.

I'd imagine most men could care less what a woman thinks about his hair (or lack thereof). Men are vain for their own sakes, not for women. But sex sells, so they had to find a way to work it into the hair club commercials.

Men are insecure about their image. They want to be loved, and if a good woman loves them bald, then they will be proud of it!
