Clean dirt has been sifted and screened to remove rocks, clay, plant roots and material, etc. Very good but very expensive topsoil. Dirty dirt has not been screened and lots of other stuff in it.

A lot of times people will advertise for "clean fill dirt wanted". I believe that means there are no contaminates in it obviously, but also simply dirt. Not dirt filled with construction debris etc.
