Since Reagan left office, the media (not just the news, either) and the public have been much more quick to use the person in office as the butt of jokes, getting cheap laughs at the expense of the US President.

I think this is wrong. In a country that is almost evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, it stands to reason that regardless of who is in office, AT LEAST half of the people in the country aren't going to like its occupant. In the case of our current president, it's a LOT more than half.

But the office of the President of the United States of America commands respect. Even if you don't like who's in there, the office commands respect.

Are you appalled by how cheaply you or someone you know hurls insults? What ever happened to the good old days where even if you disagreed, you did so respectfully?

Respect must be given to the office of the President since it is the head of state even when the person occupying do not deserve to be respected. Respect the position but not the person.

You should respect a persons position no matter how much you hate the person.. That not only goes for the leader of our country, but in the work place to. You may disagree with them, but they are in that spot for a reason. And if they aren't the person for the job, they will be replaced sooner or later.

So until then, you should do your best to do what you can to make your position work for you.

Show us where in the Constitution it says that the office of president commands any more respect than any other federal elective office. Attitudes like this are the ones which help to build up the mystique of the presidency and serve as a vehicle for that office holder to seize even more power for himself and the branch he represents. The founders of the country never intended for the office of the presidency to be held in any higher esteem than any other. In fact, they lived in fear that the executive could grab more power than intended. That's one of the reasons why they created co-equal branches of government, to keep power crazed loons like the current occupant in check. That's why the people need to support the Congress even more than they do the president. They ostensibly represent the will and interests of the people to an even larger extent than the president, who too frequently seems to owe his allegiance more to big business and big monied interests than to the people.

Remember the old saying, forgive and you will be forgiven?
The same could be said of those whom you speak about.
The person who sits in the place of power, wields the power.
Since the power is felt and applied, then I guess we would hate how it felt, if it was to hurt us in some fashion.
It is inherent that we dislike, and disapprove of the originator of that pain.
We also know that what creates that pain also has the power to create happiness as well.
Every eye beholds something differently, and it is when we refuse to look each other in the eye, and to respect that view of another, that we ourselves are blinded.

The office of the president can be respected, however we must look into how a man got into that office before we can say that the man that holds the office should or should not be ridiculed.

In bush's case, he got in there after two corrupt elections so he deserves all the ridicule that Patriotic Americans can throw at him.

As he admitted, he wants to be dictator, not president.

Regardless of what you read on these boards - most people do. There are very few people who would not even call him president to his face. Even the guys in congress call him Mr President.
