I know that irises are best thinned in the fall, but can I successfully thin them now without adverse effects to them? I live in a zone 5 climate, if that makes a difference. Thanks.

I thin my irises anytime except for the heat of summer. Remember to replant them with the rhizome just below the soil. Keep moist for a few days till they take hold.

I would wait until fall when they go dormant. They will be in a growth phase now and multiplying the below ground portion of the plant. If you digup/break up the plants now you will damage all those nice new roots and rhizomes.

The time to thin them is after they flower. As opposed to most plants, early summer is actually the preferred time to dig up, trim, and move iris of all kinds.
