1998 grand cherokee. all time 4 x 4. it started out making a whinning noise from where the shifter is located(only when the car was cold). now the car has to be warm or it doesn't want to shift from 3rd to 4th(it's fine when it's warm). the truck makes a loud nasty clunk when it is put in reverse from park but if i go from park to say drive then into reverse it is fine. i know a lot about cars so fixing it myself isn't a problem or if someone can point me in the right direction and tell me what to look at then i am sure i could figure it out. trtans fluid is fine. my trans knowledge is not the greatest. thanks.

The clunk could be a bad universal joint or constant velocity joint in the drive axles that go between the transaxle and the wheels. The whining noise may be the transmission oil pump. Make sure the transmission oil is full. (transmission has to be real hot, and the engine idling to get a good reading on the transmission dipstick). If the transmission oil hasn't been changed in over 50,000 miles, I would have them drop the pan and replace the transmission filter because it could be clogged up.

You don't need to know much, the automatic transmission is a tube, where everythiing is stock it in line, gear clutch ,gear clutch.in reality not a big deal.
the whinning noise and the clunk noise may come from a bad U-Joint.
if that were only whinning, may be the flex plate, but the clunk make the difference(flex plate don't make clunk)

back fires while this is warm engine idles erratically. seems such as you have a cyclinder that isnt' firing. as a results of fact this is while its warm i'm gonna say while the engine heats up and expands somethign is shorting out. Backfiring skill there is unburned gasoline in the headers. So i'm gonna guess and say undesirable plug wires, or caps, or distributer cap. do a spark hollow try while the engine has the project. or in basic terms pull each and each plug separately once you pull a plug and the engine shows no exchange thats your wrongdoer.
