Yes it is becoming more common in todays society. They use a type of restriction enzyme that goes in and cuts a DNA sequence in a specific spot and then a new type of gene sequence is introduced in its place. The do it a lot in transgenic animals. They have pigs that produce human hemoglobin and bacteria that produce insulin.

Any heritable chagne in genetic structure is called Muatation. We can of course change the DNA of existing species add new features to them or remove unwanted features by the use of genetic engeenering or biotechnology but we cant convert one organism to another for ex: tiger to cow until now .But it may be possible in future.

In answer to your revised question, No, once an animal has grown it is not possible to change major parts of it. You would have to make the changes when the animal was only one cell (just after fertilization).

Sure - and we don't even need a lab to do it! Look up cross-breeding and hybridization. Look at dogs and show pigeons. You can even do it yourself! When you have kids, their DNA will be different from yours and their mother's in various ways.

yes. We do all the time. We take genes out of fish and put them in tomatoes. There are experiments with gene therapy to cure certain diseases.
