The total amount of time spent on the project is 3.5 + 4.5 = 8 hours.
So, Sheila's portion of the work is 3.5 / 8
and Dora's portion of the work is 4.5 / 8
To find the amount earned by each...
Sheila:
3.5 / 8 = x / 176
8x = 176 (3.5)
x = (176)(3.5)/8 = 77
Dora:
4.5 / 8 = y / 176
8y = 176 (4.5)
y = (176)(4.5)/8 = 99

together they worked 8 hours (3.5+4.5=8). You then divide $176 by 8, it will give you $22. $22 is the amount paid for working 1 hour. Then you just multiply $22*3.5 hours which will be $77; $22*4.5 hours is $99. When you add up both their wages (77+99) it comes out to be 176.

If Sheila earned $s, then Dora earned $(176 - s)
3.5/4.5 = s/(176 - s)
Cross multiply
3.5(176 - s) = 4.5s
Distribute
616 - 3.5 s = 4.5 s
Add 3.5 s to get both s's on the right side
616 = 8s
divide
77 = s
Sheila earned $77
Dora earned 176 - 77 = $99
